{"id":5606,"date":"2024-03-26T16:49:44","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T23:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=5606"},"modified":"2025-05-05T15:29:44","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T22:29:44","slug":"clinic-cytogenetic-technologist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/v1cypwr8vx2.c.updraftclone.com\/comp\/classified-staff\/clinic-cytogenetic-technologist\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinic Cytogenetic Technologist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>17879 (NE S SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<br \/>\n18451 (E S SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<br \/>\n22621 (NE H NI SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Establish cultures from peripheral blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, and tissue biopsies, prepare stain and analyze chromosomes, and present recommended diagnosis to the attending physician for confirmation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under general supervision, perform cytogenetic laboratory procedures which lead to the formation of an accurate diagnostic report using the International System for Cytogenetic Nomenclature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summarize test results and write reports using correct International System for Cytogenetic Nomenclature;<\/p>\n<p>Participate in the orientation and training of new laboratory staff and\/or students in laboratory procedures;<\/p>\n<p>Explain procedures for collecting and processing specimens to physicians, technologists, researchers or clerical staff;<\/p>\n<p>Investigate problems with procedures and equipment; evaluate and troubleshoot problems of temperature, humidity, culturing or other factors affecting chromosome quality;<\/p>\n<p>Participate in planning for future developments in the laboratory including changes in work-load, staffing needs, work space needs, equipment or available tests;<\/p>\n<p>Review and present to peers current procedural information and advances in technology;<\/p>\n<p>May act as a charge technologist for maintaining the work area including monitoring quality control records, performing preventive maintenance of equipment, maintaining supplies and reagents, cleaning hoods, incubators, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>May perform method development and other research activities under the direction of the Lab Director or Supervisor;<\/p>\n<p>May assist in evaluating new staff;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Bachelor&#8217;s Degree with at least fifteen credit hours in a biological or physical science AND certification or eligibility for certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in Cytogenetics by the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel AND two years of progressively responsible work experience in a cytogenetics laboratory.
