{"id":5094,"date":"2024-03-24T18:12:57","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T01:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=5094"},"modified":"2025-05-22T11:58:56","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T18:58:56","slug":"mate-chief","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/v1cypwr8vx2.c.updraftclone.com\/comp\/classified-staff\/mate-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Mate, Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18974 (NE S IBU)<br \/>\n23251 (NE H NI IBU)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serve as chief mate aboard ship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;<\/p>\n<p>Under general supervision, serve as chief officer and second in command of an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stand bridge watches operating and navigating the ship;<\/p>\n<p>Supervise the fo&#8217;c&#8217;s&#8217;le crew when entering and leaving port or anchorage;<\/p>\n<p>Conduct boat drills, fire drills, and other emergency procedures;<\/p>\n<p>Supervise the work of junior mates and the deck crew; assign maintenance and repair duties;<\/p>\n<p>Maintain adequate inventory of deck department equipment and consumable supplies;<\/p>\n<p>Prepare work requests for repairs to be accomplished by shipyards;<\/p>\n<p>Supervise personnel in the loading, stowage, securing and unloading of equipment and heavy stores;<\/p>\n<p>Prepare watch lists;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legal Requirement<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. Coast Guard Chief Mate&#8217;s license valid for operation of an inspected motor vessel of unlimited tonnage, upon ocean waters.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>01\/03\/1973: New Class<br \/>\n06\/27\/1988: Revise Class<br \/>\n02\/15\/1991: Revise MQ&#8217;s<br \/>\n06\/01\/2005: CSR Class Conversion<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP 18974 (NE S IBU) 23251 (NE H NI IBU) BASIC FUNCTION Serve as chief mate aboard ship.
