{"id":4384,"date":"2024-01-17T12:17:55","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T20:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4384"},"modified":"2025-05-23T14:17:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T21:17:49","slug":"trades-helper","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/v1cypwr8vx2.c.updraftclone.com\/comp\/classified-staff\/trades-helper\/","title":{"rendered":"Trades Helper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18870 (NE S WFSE Trades)<br \/>\n22862 (NE H NI WFSE Trades)<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEFINITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform semi-skilled work in the institution&#8217;s building maintenance and alterations program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Positions in this class are distinguished by responsibility for assignment to a specific shop to work under and assist journey-craft tradesworkers in performance of semi-skilled work assignments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>General (Common to all Trades Helpers)<\/p>\n<p>Clean up, service and operate a variety of hand and power tools;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journey tradesworkers in performance of maintenance and alterations work assignments;<\/p>\n<p>Have knowledge of common materials used by the trade; obtain, prepare and deliver materials to the job site for installation by journeyworkers;<\/p>\n<p>Assist in shop office routines, including material storage and record keeping;<\/p>\n<p>Set up and work from a variety of ladders and scaffolding;<\/p>\n<p>Clean up and maintain shop areas, work sites and storage areas;<\/p>\n<p>Sheet Metal Work<\/p>\n<p>Assist roofing crews, operate tar pot, handle and place roofing materials;<\/p>\n<p>Use common shop instruments, including rules and micrometers;<\/p>\n<p>Cut, grind and polish sheet metal materials;<\/p>\n<p>Operate power shop equipment including drill press and punch press;<\/p>\n<p>Operate the sand blaster;<\/p>\n<p>Make minor assemblies of pre-formed sheet metal components including installation of fasteners;<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter Work<\/p>\n<p>Receive, stack and select lumber materials for use by journeyworkers;<\/p>\n<p>Operate a fork-lift truck;<\/p>\n<p>Cut lumber to length with power saw;<\/p>\n<p>Perform simple fabrication work, such as nailing forms, benches, flats, and installation of fasteners;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journey carpenters on maintenance and alterations projects, including nailing plasterboard, driving stakes, assembling stud walls, maintenance and installation of doors and closers;<\/p>\n<p>Operate shop equipment, including saws, sanders and drills;<\/p>\n<p>Clean and remove nails from lumber;<\/p>\n<p>Assist in installation of shades, drapes and other window coverings.<\/p>\n<p>Paint Work<\/p>\n<p>Order a wide variety of paint materials and equipment used by journey painters;<\/p>\n<p>Maintain receiving, staging and storage of paint materials for issue to journeyworkers for projects and maintenance work;<\/p>\n<p>Clean, service and adjust paint shop equipment such as tools, brushes;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journeyworkers in tree fireproofing;<\/p>\n<p>Mix colors and prepare paint materials for use by journeyworkers;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journeyworkers in other painting projects as assigned;<\/p>\n<p>Electrical Work<\/p>\n<p>Replace incandescent lamps and fluorescent tubes in a wide variety of lighting fixtures throughout the campus;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journey electricians in pulling wire, hanging fixtures, cutting and threading conduit;<\/p>\n<p>Take electrical meter readings;<\/p>\n<p>Clean up and wash light fixtures;<\/p>\n<p>Cut and prepare metal shapes for use in hanging electrical devices;<\/p>\n<p>Operate hand and portable tools, including drill motors, metal cutting equipment and power hammer;<\/p>\n<p>Plumbing and Pipefitting Work<\/p>\n<p>Operate portable and shop power equipment including drills, tapping machines, air compressors, pumps and grinders;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journey plumbers and pipefitters in cutting and threading pipe, making up pipe joints; repair of valves, pneumatic controls and refrigeration equipment; and installation of equipment;<\/p>\n<p>Assist in cutting and patching building structures for installation or removal of piping;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journey pipefitters and refrigeration mechanics in testing and adjusting flow rates, temperatures, air quantities, pressures in ventilation, refrigeration and water systems;<\/p>\n<p>Read and operate a variety of testing equipment;<\/p>\n<p>Assist journeyworkers in maintaining drainage and waste piping including use of hand-power operated pipe cleaning equipment;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High School graduation or GED Certificate; AND six months&#8217; general work experience requiring use of trades tools at the unskilled level.
